Should I help extremely shy cat--or not?

Some cats are just very timid. I rescued three that will stay around me although they don't like to be held. One is very timid but she was a feral. I just talk to them and try to get closer to them but it may never happen. They are only relaxed and will stay in the rooms when I am at home. Anyone comes in the house including family and they hide. The other is much older and she is not timid but will only come to me. They are loved and safe in my home.
